Farmers’ Markets equity toolkit

15/03/2021

Greetings! If you don’t know me, let me introduce myself, I’m Carolyn Wong the volunteer market manager, co-founder, and a person of colour (Chinese Canadian, Cisgender female), while I am a little disappointed that I wasn’t given the opportunity to contribute to this important document, it does not dimmish the importance of this anti-racism tool kit for farmers’ markets recently emailed out by the Greenbelt Farmers Market Network. Kudos to the team responsible for writing it and to be proud of the fruits of your labour.

You can access your own copy of the Anti- Racism Farmers Markets ToolKit  here: www.equityinfarmersmarkets.com  It’s a good toolkit and can easily be applied to other industries for sure.  Equity matters.

There is a critical movement now for all of us to help uplift and nurture BIPOC who historically have not had the opportunities within our predominately white society.  I’ll be honest, it will not happen over night, nor fast enough but it is gradually and surely, rest assured.

The Trinity Bellwoods Farmers’ Market continues to be open to hearing from BIPOC/BIWOC farmers – Hello and nice to meet you!  Please go to the  vendor inquiry form page  for information about participating at farmers’ market this season – the form is the best way to track who’s out there.  Feel comfortable to reach out and apply at multiple markets to broaden opportunities. The time is now and there’s tons of support.  We’re all excited to get on with it?

Looking forward to a full season that brings bounds of positive energy, kindness & patience with one another – which we all need.

Take care, keep safe kids,

Carolyn

2020 wrap up…oh what a year it’s been.

18/11/2020

Here is the collage of our amazing village vendors and volunteers this season!

It was a crazy spring leading up to opening day, albeit delayed  due to the pandemic. Big huge hugs and gratitude to all patrons, vendors and volunteers (killer team) for stepping up to the plate to support the market.  Business was not as usual.  All farmers’ market operations were based on Public Health and City approved protocols that took months of hard work and advocacy by market organizations behind the scenes.  It did not happen over night.  Each farmers’ market in Ontario found a way to run within the protocols which worked best for their situation. Some markets, could only do online ordering and pickup, sadly some were not able to run at all. It’s been a tough year.  We are fortunate that it worked out for Trinity Bellwoods.

Let’s keep the ball rolling!  Most of our vendors will be offering product in the off-season with their own arrangements for pick-up and delivery. Visit their websites and contact them directly for details.  Please support local farmers, food artisans and businesses during these uncertain times.

It is now officially hibernation time for the market organizer(s). Communications are not checked on a regular basis.  Apologizes in advance and thanks for understanding.  We are community volunteers and it is time for other life demands to take priority.

Keep safe and be patient with our fellow citizens.  We are all literally in this together.  See you in 2021 with bells on 😉
